Morocco’s World Cup journey is back in focus on Saturday as the Atlas Lions face Brazil, the five-time champions. This match could shape their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

Four years ago, Morocco made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final. Now, they return to the big stage with fresh hope and the dreams of a continent eager for another strong performance.

The Group C match will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with kick-off set for 22:00 GMT.

Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will officiate this match, featuring Africa’s best from Qatar 2022 against the nation with the most World Cup wins.

With 10 African nations participating in a World Cup for the first time, Morocco arrives in the United States determined to prove that their success in Qatar was not a fluke.

The team remains confident even with injuries sidelining key players Abde Ezzalzouli and Nayef Aguerd ahead of the first match.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi believes his team is ready for this challenge. A statement on the CAF website titled, “Morocco aim to roar again as Atlas Lions face Brazil in World Cup blockbuster,” highlighted this.

“We are very happy to be here. We feel that the World Cup is really heating up, so we can’t wait to answer your questions,” said Ouahbi.

He described the mood in the camp as positive as Morocco wrapped up their final training in New Jersey. He stated, “It’s clear that the atmosphere is positive. We are very confident. We trust in the physical condition of the players, in what we have put in place, and in the principles and values we have instilled.”

Morocco completed their last training session on Friday at Pingry School, where Ouahbi and his staff focused on tactics, pressing, and building attacks from the back.

Marouane Saâdane and Amine Sebbar have been called up to replace the injured Ezzalzouli and Aguerd.

Despite these challenges, Ouahbi insisted Morocco will stick to their successful style. “We won’t change our principles much. We’ve shown good things and we’ll keep showing them by staying true to our principles,” he said proudly.

He added, “Just because we’re playing our first World Cup match, it doesn’t mean we’ll change everything.”

All eyes will be on captain Achraf Hakimi, who is set to face Brazilian star Vinicius Junior in a key duel. “I think everyone knows the Brazilian national team. We know Vinicius’ qualities. I’ve already played against him many times and he’s a great player,” Hakimi said.

While acknowledging Brazil's strength, Hakimi said Morocco believes in themselves. He continued, “We know Brazil, its history, the quality of its players. But we also have quality. In Africa, they call us the ‘Brazilians of Africa.’ We are talented players and we have our strengths.

“I believe we are ready to do something important, with confidence and with the support of all Moroccans.”

Brazil arrives in North America as one of the tournament favorites, with a squad full of top talent from Europe. But Morocco’s recent performances against traditional football powers give them confidence.

The Atlas Lions beat Belgium, Spain, and Portugal during their remarkable run to the semi-finals in Qatar. Now they have another chance to challenge one of the world’s football giants.

For Morocco, the goal is clear: start the tournament strongly and gain momentum.

“We are completely focused on the first match, on tomorrow. We want to start in the best possible way. Then we will think match by match, trying to go as far as possible and do better than at the last World Cup,” Hakimi said.

As the World Cup spotlight shines on East Rutherford, Morocco once again carries the hopes of a continent, ready to make another big statement.
