The Borno State Police have stopped 55 sacks filled with 60ml bottles of a banned substance called “Gumm” on their way to international borders.
ASP Nahum Daso, the Public Relations Officer, shared the news in a statement on Saturday. The police caught the shipment on June 26, during an operation by the Command’s X-Squad on Baga Road-Bypass in Maiduguri.
The statement said, “In its ongoing efforts to fight drug trafficking and abuse, the Borno State Police Command, led by CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, has achieved another major success by arresting a suspect and recovering a large amount of illegal substances hidden in sacks.
“On June 26, 2026, around 7:11 PM, officers from the Command’s X-Squad, acting on reliable information, stopped an Isuzu Bedford pick-up truck along Baga Road-Bypass, Maiduguri. A detailed search of the vehicle revealed fifty-five (55) sacks filled with many 60ml bottles of a banned substance known as ‘Gumm.’”
Daso mentioned that early investigations showed the illegal substances were meant for Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area and were intended to be smuggled across borders.
“During the operation, one Babagana Modu, aged 51, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested. The suspect told investigators that he was hired to transport the goods to their final destination,” he added.
He said the police are still working to catch others linked to this illegal operation who are currently on the run.
“The case is still under active investigation, and more details will be provided as the inquiry continues,” he stated.
The PPRO also emphasized the command’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking and other crimes in the state.
“The Command calls on the public to keep supporting the Police with timely and reliable information to help prevent crime,” the statement ended.
