Police in Taiwan have taken down an illegal online betting ring and seized over $300 million in World Cup bets. Authorities announced this on Thursday.
Taiwan did not make it to the World Cup, but many people on the island love football.
On Wednesday, police raided a house in Tainan, a city in the south. The Fourth Precinct of the Tainan City Police Department shared this information in a statement.
During the raid, they arrested eight people. They also took computers, mobile phones, ledgers, and cash, according to the statement.
Out of the eight arrested, five came from Hong Kong and Macao with tourist visas to take part in the World Cup betting scheme.
Police reported that the operation had taken in almost NT$10 billion, which is about $313 million, in bets on World Cup matches.
For the duration of the tournament, the group had rented a five-storey house.
