The Anambra State security team, known as Agunechemba operatives, has taken down an armed gang in Aguata Local Government Area. They killed three suspects, while others ran away with gunshot wounds.
This operation happened on Tuesday night. The Agunechemba operatives, working with the FOB Unit in Aguata, seized a Rocket-Propelled Grenade, AK-47 rifles, and the gang's white Hilux van. They also recovered various charms, handbags, and other items linked to the gang.
On Wednesday, Nweke Nweke, the Media and Publicity Secretary for Agunechemba, released a statement. He said this gang had attacked the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
PUNCH Online reported on June 2 that gunmen had attacked the convoy of the new Chief of Staff, Ben Nwankwo. This attack claimed the lives of four people, including two police officers and two civilians.
The gang had set up an ambush and opened fire on the convoy along Amansea, Ndiora, Ndiukwuenu, Awa, Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Area.
In Nweke's statement, he said Agunechemba operatives, working with the police, raided the gang's camp after gathering intelligence. During the shootout, three gang members were killed.
The statement read, "Last night, (23/06/2026) the Agunechemba Unit from FOB Aguata in Anambra State neutralised three members of a terror group that has caused considerable turmoil in the state, while several others managed to flee with gunshot injuries."
"This gang had been masquerading in Federal Government security uniforms and had previously attacked the convoy of Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, resulting in casualties. Their downfall occurred during a firepower encounter with our operatives."
Nweke continued, "With thorough intelligence gathering, our team, in partnership with police, zeroed in on the gang in Isuofia-Igboukwu area, where they were robbing innocent victims. As our operatives approached, the gang attempted to flee. In a determined chase, Agunechemba and police units sealed off all escape routes in the Aguata LGA Area."
"Realising they were being pursued, the gang opened fire, but thanks to divine intervention and the ancestors of the Anambra State, three notorious gang members were neutralised without any casualties among Agunechemba operatives."
The statement added, "Our intelligence indicates that these dangerous individuals were using a white Hilux van for a variety of criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and the abduction of innocent civilians throughout the Anambra South Senatorial District and beyond, operating freely."
To celebrate this victory, Prince Ken Emekayi, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Sylvester Ofodeme, who chairs the State House of Assembly Committee on Internal Security, and Chief Chinenye Ihenko, the Head of Operations of Agunechemba, said dismantling this gang is a major win for security forces in Anambra.
The operation also led to the recovery of a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG), AK-47 rifles, the gang’s white Hilux van, and various charms, handbags, and other incriminating items.
