When Alex Iwobi plays against Portugal in Leiria today, he will join a special group of just three other Nigerians in the Super Eagles' history. Iwobi will be the fourth player to reach 100 appearances, joining Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa in this elite club.
Iwobi's path to becoming Nigeria's fourth centurion is about following his heart, staying consistent, and building a legacy that still grows. The Fulham midfielder previously played for England at youth level. He faced a big choice that many athletes face. He picked Nigeria, and nearly 11 years later, he is happy with his decision.
"I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria," Iwobi told NFF Media as he got ready for his 100th match.
His uncle, Nigerian football legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, played a part in his decision. Still, Iwobi has said that the final choice was his alone. He went to the Nigeria U-23 camp, felt at home right away, and everything else fell into place.
"I actually went to the under-23s and experienced it for myself, and I felt a lot like I’m at home. No disrespect to England because I had a good time there, but Nigeria is where my heart is," he shared.
Iwobi made his senior debut on October 8, 2015, in a friendly against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium. Since then, he has become one of the most dependable and adaptable players in the Super Eagles. He has played for different coaches and adjusted to various strategies while keeping the qualities that make him valuable, his technical skill, tactical awareness, and strong work ethic.
One of his best moments in the green-and-white jersey happened on October 7, 2017, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. His goal against Zambia secured Nigeria’s spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Iwobi went on to represent Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup and has taken part in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He won a silver medal in 2023 and bronze medals in 2019 and 2025. In his 99 appearances, he has scored 10 goals and provided eight assists.
