The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu, has warned people about fake Augmentin 625mg tablets in Nigeria. He also mentioned that these counterfeit tablets might be found in the state.
Mr Ugwu, who is a professor, shared this warning in a statement from the ministry's Public Relations Officer, Chidiogo Ugodu. This statement was given to reporters on Thursday.
He explained that information available shows the fake tablets have the same Batch Number, AC3N, as the real ones from GlaxoSmithKline.
But he pointed out that the fake tablets have different manufacturing and expiry dates. They show September 2025 and 2028 as their expiry dates.
The commissioner also highlighted that the counterfeit tablets had texture problems and bad packaging seals. This raises big concerns about how safe and effective they are.
"Members of the public are advised to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and accredited health facilities."
He added, "Providers and the general public should carefully inspect all Augmentin 625mg tablets before use."
Mr Ugwu urged anyone who thinks they have seen or sold the fake tablets to report it to the nearest health authority or the Enugu State Ministry of Health.
"Together, let us protect our communities from the dangers of counterfeit medicines," the statement concluded.
