Promoter Frank Warren has said that the location for the big fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is still not known. He mentioned that all parties need to meet first before they can confirm the date and venue of the match, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Warren, who co-promotes Fury with Saudi businessman Turki Alalshikh under Queensberry Promotions, said he prefers a UK location for this all-British fight. But he hasn’t ruled out the United States, with Las Vegas being mentioned as a strong possibility.
“I’d love it to take place in the UK. But as I’ve tried to explain to everybody, until that meeting takes place I don’t think anything is going to be determined where it takes place or the date it takes place,” Warren said. “But whatever happens the fight is signed and it will happen. Because everyone wants it to happen.”
The fight, aimed for late November, would finally settle years of talks between the two former heavyweight champions. Fury, who is 37, recently came out of retirement to beat Arslanbek Makhmudov in April. He is also set for another fight in August before facing Joshua.
Joshua, who is 35, is scheduled to fight Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Saudi Arabia. He needs to win this fight to keep the match with Fury on track.
Talk about how the fight will be promoted has grown after Fury hinted at a “massive announcement” from Zuffa Boxing president Dana White. White’s company is backed by Saudi funds and was started to compete with other promoters in the sport.
Fury later confirmed that he would be promoted by Alalshikh, but Warren clarified that he is still involved in the process.
“My understanding is what his management said, and that is he is being promoted by Turki and by us. That’s how it is. I am very comfortable with that,” Warren said.
“All that is happening at the moment is our team is working on having an interim fight before he fights AJ in late November. Of course I’ll be a part of it. I am with him.”
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has said many times that Zuffa Boxing will not be involved in the fight. He insists that Joshua’s contract requires the match to be held in the United Kingdom. The different views from both teams have added to the uncertainty about where the fight will actually take place.
Two-time heavyweight champion Joshua has invited Fury to watch him fight Prenga in July, just like Fury was there when Joshua saw him beat Makhmudov in April.
