The police have arrested the parents of twin babies whose dead bodies were found in a drainage channel on Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Residents discovered the bodies on Sunday morning. They were wrapped in a box with baby clothes. Passersby alerted the Okpoko Police Division right away.

A resident named Uche, who was one of the first to see the bodies, said they were left in a way that made them easy to spot. She expressed shock at the act, saying, “This is shameful and must not be encouraged, as people now engage in such acts at will. How can someone in her right senses do this type of thing in this age, when we have many orphanages around?”

Another eyewitness suggested that the babies might have been abandoned by a girl or woman who could not handle the responsibility of raising them.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. He said the parents had been located and arrested, and they are currently in police custody helping with the investigation.

Ikenga mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, called the discovery of the twin infants a “disturbing case of man’s inhumanity to man.” He also said it was a serious violation of the value of human life.

The Commissioner praised the police officers for their quick response and thorough work that led to the arrest of the parents soon after the incident was reported.

He stated, “The police operatives attached to Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters, in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026, received information about the discovery of two lifeless infant twins abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.”

“Following the report, operatives immediately swung into action, secured the scene, gathered vital evidence, and commenced investigations.”

“The preliminary investigation led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants, who are currently in police custody and assisting investigators in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act strongly. He noted that every child deserves protection, care, and the chance to live.

He promised that the police would ensure anyone found guilty of this act would face the full force of the law.

Investigations are ongoing, and more updates will be provided soon.
