Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo on Wednesday rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and promised to stay loyal to the party.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that party leaders and supporters welcomed Ms Obasanjo at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
During the event, the PDP leaders handed her the party flag, representing the Ogun Central senatorial district ticket for the 2027 general elections.
While speaking at the ceremony, Ms Obasanjo, who left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in late May, promised to follow the PDP’s constitution, manifesto, and code of conduct. She had resigned about two months after losing the race for the APC’s governorship ticket.
The first daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo said she would uphold the values of the PDP and work with integrity, humility, and dedication.
“I shall prioritise the welfare of the people above personal and sectional interests,” she stated.
NAN reports that Ms Obasanjo represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 under the PDP banner. She returned to Nigeria after spending some years abroad and joined the APC in January but left just five months later after failing to secure the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 elections.
The former APC governorship aspirant mentioned that she left the party because of unfair treatment and disrespect.
Earlier, Ogun PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella formally presented the party flag to her. Mr Tella said the flag showed the party’s support for her candidacy in Ogun Central.
He described Ms Obasanjo as a valued member and expressed trust in her ability to contribute positively to the party.
Ladi Adebutu, the PDP governorship candidate, praised the determination and selfless service of Senator Obasanjo, calling her a true daughter of the soil. Mr Adebutu also promised that if he became the governor, he would ensure local government autonomy worked well in the state.
