Moffi excited to lead Eagles in London

Terem Moffi is happy to have captained the Super Eagles for the first time. He led the team to the final of the Unity Cup in London, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Moffi started the match and wore the captain’s armband for Nigeria on Tuesday. The team won 2-0 against Zimbabwe in the semi-final match held at The Valley, the home ground of Charlton Athletic in London.

The FC Porto striker played well and provided the assist for the second goal scored by debutant Femi Azeez. After the match, Moffi shared his thoughts on the win and looked forward to Saturday’s final.

“Captaining the Super Eagles was a proud moment for myself and my family, and I am really proud of the boys. They showed what we can do,” Moffi told Nigeria Football Weekly.

“At top level, I play as a sole striker, so it wasn’t difficult. We had Philip supporting as well. May we win on Saturday.”

Since his debut against Cameroon in a friendly match in June 2021, Moffi has played 20 times for Nigeria and scored four goals. The 27-year-old is currently at a turning point in his club career. Porto is not willing to pay €8m to make his move from OGC Nice permanent.

Nice sent him to Porto after he reportedly refused to play for the French club due to abuse from supporters last year. Porto has also turned down the chance to sign him for €8m. This decision puts the Super Eagles forward back on the transfer market, and a return to Nice seems unlikely.

Reports say that ES Troyes AC and FK Partizan are now interested in the striker. Moffi joined Nice from FC Lorient in a deal worth €22.5m. He scored two goals and made one assist in 15 matches for Porto.

Before now, West Ham United FC had shown interest in the striker. They even made a £25m bid in January 2023 when he was seen as a possible replacement for Michail Antonio.

Aston Villa FC also talked with his agents during that time. Meanwhile, Italian team SS Lazio is keeping an eye on him as they look for more attacking options. French clubs like Olympique de Marseille and Paris FC are also monitoring the striker, along with Turkish team Fenerbahçe SK, which has always been interested.
