The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has called up 29 athletes to join the Commonwealth Games camp at the National Sports Commission (NSC).
This is to prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, in July.
The AFN shared this news in a statement from its Media Coordinator, Kola Oredipe, on Wednesday.
Oredipe said the athletes were picked after the national trials in Lagos.
"The athletes, made up of 14 men and 15 women, were selected based on their performances in the trials," he said.
He also mentioned that the selection took into account athletes who could not attend the trials due to visa problems.
"The list also includes athletes who missed the Lagos trials because of visa issues," Oredipe added.
The AFN Media Coordinator confirmed that all selected athletes have received their invitation letters.
"The letters, signed by the Secretary-General of the Federation, Israel Inwang, asked the invited athletes to report to camp," he said.
"They are expected at the NSC National Commonwealth Games camp in Abuja starting from Thursday, 25 June."
The athletics team will participate in 18 events at the Commonwealth Games.
These events include three relay races: the men’s 4×100 metres, women’s 4×100 metres, and mixed 4×400 metres relays.
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, is optimistic about the team's preparations before the international event.
Okowa wished the athletes, coaches, and officials a successful training camp without any issues.
The male athletes invited include Ajayi Kanyinsola, Akintola Alaba, and Ashe Favour.
Other names on the list are Ezeakor Chidera, Fakorede Adekalu, Okon Israel, and Onwuzuruike Udodi.
