Nollywood actor Charles Born has caught people's attention on social media. He celebrated his mother, Stella Born, on Father's Day. This came after he reflected on his tough relationship with his father.
In a post on Instagram on Sunday, he wrote, “HAPPY FATHERS DAY DAD @_phinicscreationzandevents. I want to type an epistle, I want to write a long caption, but all I’ll say is THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.”
The heartfelt post brought back focus to an earlier interview. In that interview, the actor opened up about his painful childhood experiences.
Speaking on a recent episode of Food Therapy, a show hosted by Chef Ify, Charles Born described his childhood as hard. He claimed he faced both emotional and physical abuse while growing up.
“My childhood isn’t the best in terms of love, care, attention… tell me why for the life of me that the man I call my father would take a picture of his firstborn son and throw it behind the cupboard,” he said.
He also said he often faced verbal abuse from his father. “The man I call my father would say things like, ‘you are useless’ and ‘you can never amount to anything,’” he added.
Charles Born shared stories of physical punishment that left lasting emotional scars. “He used to soak a horsewhip in a custard bucket with pepper inside. He would strip me and flog me while I was shouting, and nobody was listening,” he said.
He recalled a moment when he nearly gave up during one of those incidents. “I remember looking through the veranda and saying I will jump, and I was going to jump,” he said.
Luckily, a neighbor stepped in after hearing the noise. “My neighbour in the other flat saw what was going on and shouted, ‘what is going on?’. He stepped on the glass door, it broke, and he carried me and took me downstairs,” he said.
After the episode aired, Charles Born reassured his fans in the comments. He explained that he is doing well now and has been in therapy for years. He also forgave his father.
“You guys ooo!!! Thanks for the love. I promise I’m fine and I’m healing well. been in therapy for years!!!!! I have forgiven him!!! Still trying to forget, but I have forgiven him!” he wrote.
His Father's Day post sparked reactions on Instagram. Fans praised his mother for making his childhood better.

Another user, #fitng_geng, said, “Happy father’s day to every woman that stood against all odds….left to live…. nurtured their own with every strength left with them….may the comics favor and bless her beyond words….not every angel wear capes.”
One user shared a personal story that resonated with Charles' post. “As na me be pepper and salt for my own boys life now, tomorrow one person go wan come take them from me. I’m drifting slowly into depression each day but for the grace of God, yet someone out there, living his best life feels entitled to my babies.
“Except if God is no longer God. I go dey alive sha, see my babies celebrate like this and even more and nothing will ever separate us, even if na sand, me and them go chop am. We go survive.
