Brazilian football legend and former Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldinho Gaucho, has made a surprising move to Italian Serie C club Ravenna at the age of 46. This signing has caught the attention of fans worldwide, but there is still doubt about whether the famous playmaker will actually play in any competitive matches for the third division team.

Ravenna announced that the global star will be unveiled at a special event in Miami on June 23. For a club getting ready for their season in Italy’s third tier, signing one of football’s biggest names is a strong statement of their ambition.

“New Colours, Same Smile”

Ronaldinho shared his excitement about the move and his long-standing love for the game.

“New colours, same smile,” the Brazilian said. “I can’t wait to be able to dance on the ball again to write a new story together with Ignazio and the whole Cipriani family. Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”

The push for this transfer seems to come from club owner Ignazio Cipriani, who said the move fulfills a personal dream.

“I spent 24 years of my life in the United States, but I still consider Ravenna my home,” Cipriani stated. “Acquiring Ronaldinho is something absolutely extraordinary for the club. He was my idol, and his impact on football goes far beyond what he achieved on the pitch.”

The Competitive Question

Despite the excitement, mixed messages from the club have left fans unsure if the 2002 World Cup winner will play.

Ravenna’s vice-president, Ariedo Braida, who was the AC Milan sporting director that brought Ronaldinho to Milan in 2008, initially downplayed the idea of a competitive return.

“Ronaldinho will do a marketing event with us but will not play for Ravenna in Serie C next season,” Braida told journalist Nicolò Schira via Corriere Romagna. “Also, because he’s 46. I wish he could still play.”

But later, Braida spoke to ANSA and did not completely rule out the possibility of Ronaldinho playing. “Ronaldinho is a timeless champion… Will he play? We’ll see, but it’s not ruled out.”

A Legacy Redefined

If Ronaldinho does step onto the pitch, it would be a remarkable return after more than a decade since his last competitive game for Fluminense in 2015.

Known as one of the most naturally talented players ever, the attacking midfielder has had great times at Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, where he won the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d’Or. During his time at AC Milan from 2008 to 2011, he scored 26 goals in 95 games, making him a fan favorite.

Whether his role at Ravenna is symbolic, commercial, or competitive, his arrival will shine a spotlight on the club as they prepare for the 2026/27 Serie C season under manager Andrea Mandorlini.

For now, the biggest question remains: Is Ronaldinho just a global ambassador for the club, or are we seeing a surprising return of one of football’s greatest entertainers?
