The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Friday opened the permanent headquarters of the Taraba State Police Command in Jalingo, which is the state capital. This marks the first purpose-built command headquarters in Taraba since the state was created in 1991.
While opening the new police command headquarters, Disu shared his hope that this new structure would help improve security operations, enhance the welfare of police officers, and strengthen the relationship between the police and the community.
Disu was represented by the Commissioner of Police, Taraba State Command, Moorkwap Dongshal Sebastine. He mentioned that the new facility would help with operational efficiency and contribute to peace, security, and development in Taraba.
He also praised the Federal Government, the Taraba State Government, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, and all others who supported the project. He said the headquarters shows the police leadership's commitment to providing a good working environment for officers.
“The completion of this magnificent building is long overdue, considering that Taraba State was created in 1991. However, it is better late than never. This project shows the determination of the Nigeria Police Force leadership to create a lasting legacy and a good environment for officers to do their jobs well,” he said.
Disu emphasized that the welfare of police officers is very important. He said that happy officers are better able to do their jobs well. He promised that the force would continue to improve working conditions with better office facilities, housing, healthcare, training, and other welfare programs. He encouraged officers to take good care of the building and its facilities for future generations.
The IGP also urged traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, the media, and the public to support the police with timely and credible information. He noted that effective policing needs cooperation between security agencies and the community.
In his speech, Governor Agbu Kefas reaffirmed his administration’s promise to strengthen security. He noted that peace, economic growth, social harmony, and sustainable development can only happen in a safe environment.
The governor, represented by the Commandant of Taraba Marshals, retired Commissioner of Police Abeh Cyril, said the project was a result of collective efforts to improve security infrastructure and the operational capacity of law enforcement in the state.
He thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for making the project a reality. He added that the new facility would create a good working environment for officers and improve their efficiency and service delivery.
Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, also spoke. He said the opening of the new facility shows the Federal Government’s commitment to improving security infrastructure and police welfare.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing security in the Renewed Hope Agenda and praised the IGP for his leadership. He said that investing in security institutions is really an investment in the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
