An Anambra State High Court in Awka, led by Justice Jude Obiora, granted bail of N50 million to Ikechukwu Ezenagu, a native doctor from Nnewi. He is also known as “Muomiri Afuluanya.” The court set a surety of the same amount to be provided.
Justice Obiora added more conditions for the bail. The defendant must deposit the title document of his house. If he fails to appear in court, he will lose the title document.
Ezenagu is not allowed to speak to the press during his trial. Justice Obiora stated, “the defendant has been granted a bail in the sum of N50 million and a surety in like sum. Other bail conditions include deposit of title document of a house, which would be forfeited if the defendant jumps bail.”
Kingsley Awuka, one of Ezenagu's lawyers, spoke after the court session. He said, “the court was gracious in granting the bail, and deservedly so.” Awuka mentioned that the bail conditions are achievable for the defendant. He is hopeful that justice will be served.
The prosecution is led by Tobechukwu Nweke, the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Ezenagu faces charges for breaking parts of the Anambra Homeland Security Law.
His arrest took place on March 26 by members of Anambra’s security outfit, Agunechemba. They accused him of violating the state’s Homeland Security Law.
After his arrest, security operatives searched his house in Nnewi. This was part of the investigation into his activities. Ezenagu was taken to court from the hospital on June 3. His lawyer, Kingsley Awuka, requested bail due to health issues and asked to stay in the hospital until the next court date.
During the June 3 court session, prosecuting lawyer Tobechukwu Nweke opposed the bail request. He asked the court to keep the defendant in custody until the bail motion was decided. Ezenagu was held at the Amawbia Correctional Centre until he received bail on Friday, June 19.
PUNCH Online reported on March 26 that Ezenagu was arrested by Agunechemba for allegedly breaching the state’s Homeland Security Law. Security operatives also went to his house in Nnewi to conduct a search related to the investigation.
At that time, Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, told reporters that the native doctor was encouraging young people to seek his services. He claimed Ezenagu promised them wealth through rituals, including bathing in a stream behind his house.
Emeakayi insisted that these actions went against the Homeland Security Law. He noted that Ezenagu had been warned by authorities before but did not stop his practices.
