Ekiti Election: Observers Report Vote Buying and Irregularities

Observers from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) have spotted vote buying and other issues during the governorship election in Ekiti State on Saturday.

The group shared this information in an update on Sunday. They expressed worries about actions that could harm the trust in the electoral process.

CJID stated that their observers found cases of vote trading in many local government areas. This happened even after electoral officials and security agencies warned against it.

The report also mentioned situations where party agents seemed to help voters at polling units.

In Nigeria, vote buying and voter inducement are serious crimes. Both those who offer and those who accept these inducements can face penalties under the Electoral Act.

CJID pointed out that while helping voters is allowed in specific cases, such help is only for people with visual impairments or other disabilities. The law also says the assistance must come from someone chosen by the voter.

The group emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must ensure proper support systems for voters who need help.

CJID condemned these actions and called on INEC and security agencies to look into the reported cases. They want those found guilty to be punished according to the law.

"Vote trading and all forms of voter inducement threaten the integrity of elections and undermine the democratic process," the organization said.

They urged the relevant authorities to act quickly to prevent future issues and boost public trust in the electoral system.
