The former president of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde, has praised the rising standard of play at the ongoing fourth edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament in Lagos.

Oyerinde spoke on Wednesday during the second-round matches at the Teslim Balogun Stadium squash courts. He called the championship an important place for developing talent.

The tournament started on June 22 and will end on June 27. Players are competing in different categories.

Oyerinde said the quality of matches and the performance of young players have improved a lot compared to past editions.

“The growth is evident for everyone to see.

“The games are better, the players are getting better, and it shows they are putting in the hard work in training.

“I am particularly impressed with the junior players. Some of them are very young, yet their level of play has improved remarkably from what we saw last year. It is fantastic and encouraging for the future of the sport,” Oyerinde said.

The tournament’s lead referee, Adebowale Oladeji, also noticed more players joining and an improvement in playing standards.

Meanwhile, several players have reached the quarter-finals after strong wins in the second round.

Temiloluwa Adegoke beat Sheu Muyideen 3-0, while Samuel Nduka-Uba also won 3-0 against Abudusman Olanrewaju.

Defending champion Tayo Oyinlomo moved to the quarter-finals after defeating Monday Bright. Samson Asade earned his spot in the last eight by winning against Daniel Elisa.

In other matches, Giwa Shuaib triumphed over Yusuf Babalola 3-0, Ayomide Oladipupo took down Victor Effiong, and Faruq Sulaimon defeated Stephen Adebayo 3-0.

The Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament continues to draw some of Nigeria’s top players and rising talents, creating a space for competition and player growth.
