Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is cheering for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup. He thinks they can earn a point against England in Tuesday’s Group L match in Foxborough, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ghana will play England next after starting their tournament with a tough 1, 0 win over Panama on Thursday.

Caleb Yirenkyi scored a last-minute goal to give Ghana the win and deny Panama their first World Cup point in Toronto, Canada.

This win marked Ghana’s sixth victory in 16 World Cup matches, matching Nigeria’s record from 21 matches in the tournament.

Even with the strong rivalry between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars, Troost-Ekong said he is supporting Ghana. The last World Cup qualifying match between the two teams saw Ghana stop Nigeria from getting to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Al Ahli Doha defender, now a pundit for SuperSport at the World Cup after retiring from international football last year, said he wants Ghana to do well, starting with their group game against England.

“I would love Ghana to go and do well. I think the beauty of the World Cup is that we want to see other African teams do well. This is very important for the continent,” he said.

“Besides the rivalry, where we play against each other often, there’s also a lot of love for each other because we know the players well. Maybe now that I have retired from the national team, it’s easier to say that.”

Troost-Ekong was happy with Ghana’s performance against Panama. He noted there were many positives as they prepare for the match against England. He thought they showed great resilience in that game.

He added that the substitutes, especially Brandon Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu, made a big difference. He believes they have given England something to think about.

Troost-Ekong also mentioned that he could not predict if Thomas Partey would be available. Partey missed the game in Toronto because he was not allowed entry into Canada.

Still, he thinks England have weaknesses in defense. The Three Lions beat Croatia 4, 2 in their first match, with Harry Kane scoring two goals in the first half.

England’s lead was equalized twice before halftime, but Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford scored in the second half to secure the win.

“I think winning against Panama will help them play with confidence against England. From what I’ve seen of England, there are definitely chances to exploit.”

“If I had to predict that game, I’d probably say a draw because I can see both teams scoring.”
