Manchester United has confirmed that Manuel Ugarte, Uruguay's midfielder, injured his knee ligaments in a World Cup match against Spain.
Ugarte was taken off on a stretcher in the first half after he twisted awkwardly while trying to tackle during the play that led to Spain’s winning goal in Guadalajara.
The 25-year-old looked upset as he left the field, and reports say he might be out for several months.
On Saturday, Uruguay’s medical team checked Ugarte. He will now head to Manchester for more tests.
“Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain,” the Premier League club said on Sunday.
“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.
“Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
Ugarte’s future at Manchester United is unclear. He has not played for Michael Carrick’s team since their loss to Leeds in April.
He joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and has scored two goals in 69 matches across all competitions.
