The United States government has said it will stop funding HIV/AIDS programs in South Africa. They blame policy disagreements and growing tensions between the two countries.

This news, reported by BBC News Worldwide, affects the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This is a big change for one of the largest HIV response partnerships in the world.

The decision comes as relations between Washington and Pretoria have worsened. The US is concerned about South Africa’s policies, especially those affecting the white Afrikaner minority.

A US State Department official said a phased reduction of PEPFAR funding will start soon. This is because South Africa has not shown “demonstrable progress” on policy requests made by the Donald Trump administration.

The official added that this decision aims to encourage self-reliance. They believe South Africa can fund its own health programs since it is a middle-income country.

South Africa’s Health Ministry said they have not received any official notice about this decision. However, they mentioned that they are already working on strategies to lessen their dependence on outside funding.

This announcement is worrying because South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. More than eight million people in the country are affected by the virus.

For many years, PEPFAR has been important for South Africa’s fight against HIV. It has provided about $400 million each year before funding cuts started under the Trump administration.

PEPFAR has supported prevention, treatment, and healthcare programs. South African authorities said that buying life-saving antiretroviral medicines is done separately and mostly funded by the government.

This funding cut comes as relations between Washington and Pretoria have been getting worse since President Trump took office again.

Shortly after he was inaugurated, Mr Trump signed an executive order. This order accused the South African government of having policies that discriminate against the country’s white Afrikaner minority and harm equal opportunities.

The order also criticized South Africa's foreign policies. This includes its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice and its relationships with Iran.

The South African government denied these allegations. They said their Black Economic Empowerment policies aim to fix inequalities created during apartheid and do not discriminate against any racial group.

Mr Trump has also claimed that a “white genocide” is happening in South Africa. The South African government and many analysts and human rights groups have rejected these claims.
