Favour Ashe put on an incredible show on Tuesday. He ran a personal best of 9.93 seconds to win the men’s 100 metres title at the Commonwealth Games Trials in Lagos.
Ashe's time, achieved with a legal wind reading of +0.5m/s, makes him the fastest Nigerian man ever on home soil. This historic final took place at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.
Nicholas Fakorede came in second with a personal best of 9.98 seconds. Chidera Ezeakor also had a great run, finishing third in 10.03 seconds, his lifetime best.
This race is now a part of Nigerian athletics history. Ashe and Fakorede are the first Nigerian sprinters to run under 10 seconds in the same race since Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu did it in Abuja back in 2003.
Tejiri Godwin finished fourth with a personal best of 10.20 seconds. Enoch Adegoke placed fifth, finishing in 10.27 seconds.
Ashe showed he was ready for the title earlier in the semifinals. He clocked 9.97 seconds there, but the wind reading was illegal at +2.3m/s. This was the first time a sub-10-second run occurred on Nigerian soil under any conditions since Ashe himself ran 9.99 seconds in 2022.
The men’s 100m final wrapped up three days of competition. The event included many impressive performances across different track and field events.
