The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, announced on Thursday the formation of a Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Muhuyi Magaji, who was the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), will lead the task force.

This decision was shared in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature. It is part of the government’s plan to break down drug trafficking networks and protect the youth in the state.

Bature added that the 20-member committee includes people from law enforcement, education, and civil society to ensure they work together effectively.

Ibrahim Muhammad, who is the Executive Secretary of the Consumer Protection Council, will be the Secretary. He will be supported by Aliyu Sani, the Director of Research and Evaluation at REPA, who will act as Co-Secretary.

Kano’s drug problem

Kano State has faced a serious drug abuse issue, especially among young people, women, and those without jobs.

The state struggles with not just common drugs like cannabis but also with prescription opioids, such as tramadol and codeine cough syrups. There are also concerns about the use of strong synthetic drugs.

Experts say this addiction is tied to wider social and economic problems, including high unemployment and peer pressure.

Local security reports also connect the drug trade to the rise in youth gangs (Yan Daba) and violent crime in the city.

Role of the task force

The task force has specific responsibilities. They will identify major drug distribution points and improve information sharing among security agencies.

The task force will also carry out targeted raids and arrests. They are tasked with tracking financial assets related to drug trafficking and ensuring quick justice.

They will work with the judiciary to set up fast-track courts for quick trials of offenders. Additionally, the task force will run public awareness campaigns in schools and among vulnerable groups.

Support for recovery

The task force is also expected to collaborate with traditional and religious organizations to enhance rehabilitation services for people recovering from addiction.

Governor Yusuf stated that substance abuse is “one of the greatest threats facing the future of our young people.”

He urged the members to show patriotism and professionalism in their work. He wants the task force to start immediately to protect the future of Kano State.
