A woman, Amarachi Kalu, who was seen being attacked by a man, Agwu Ukpo, in Abia State, is asking the Nigeria Police Force to take action against the 37-year-old suspect.

Reports earlier showed how Mr Ukpo was filmed violently attacking Ms Kalu inside an apartment in Aba, which is the commercial center of the state.

The police have arrested the suspect for the assault that took place in April.

A video of the attack appeared online in June.

How it happened

Ms Kalu, the victim, described in a video interview how the incident unfolded.

This video interview was done by a human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, and posted on Facebook on Monday.

In the clip, the victim explained that the trouble started when Mr Ukpo made advances towards her, which she turned down, even after he offered her N50,000.

β€œI said no and told him that I am married,” she said.

Ms Kalu said that a few days later, Mr Ukpo allegedly threw her pot of soup into a laundry basin.

She mentioned that his brother, who is called Obinna, scolded Mr Ukpo, but he did not listen to him.

The victim said the latest incident occurred when she emptied Mr Ukpo’s leftover soup into the washing basin and cleaned her pot to prepare her own meal.

β€œBut Obinna went and poured the soup back into the pot and told me not to let Ukpo make trouble,” she said in Pidgin English.

Ms Kalu shared that Mr Ukpo later started shouting at her after he realized what she did.

She said the suspect called her insulting names and then threatened to beat her before attacking her.

A video showed Mr Ukpo pinning her down and hitting her repeatedly with his fists.

Ms Kalu stated that Mr Ukpo ignored pleas from neighbors and others nearby to stop the attack.

β€œHe was repeatedly hitting me in the back, head, chest and eyes. He hit me repeatedly until I became weak and motionless before he scaled the fence and ran away,” she recalled in Pidgin English.

Demand for justice

Ms Kalu is calling on the police in Abia to prosecute the suspect for the assault and make him pay for her medical bills.

β€œI want the police to charge him and all the money my husband spent for my treatment refunded,” she said.
