The Rivers State Police has arrested officers seen in a viral video allegedly collecting money from motorists in the state.

ASP Agabe Kaborlo, the police spokesperson, shared this news in a statement on Tuesday. He spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju.

The statement mentioned that the command took note of the video and social media posts claiming that ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers were extorting money from the public while on duty.

This issue came to light after social media activist Comrade Phils accused a group of officers from the Old GRA Police Station. This station is near the Rivers State Government House and close to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s home. The officers were said to be targeting drivers, especially those with tinted windows.

People complained that these officers, led by ASP Geoffrey, ignored valid tinted glass permits, including factory-fitted ones. They demanded cash payments starting from ₦100,000.

The state police command said it takes these allegations very seriously. They stated that such actions go against the core values and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement continued, "The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered their arrest, detention and immediate investigation into the allegation."

The Commissioner also stressed that extortion, illegal money collection, and any unprofessional conduct by police officers will not be accepted. He said the Command is committed to making sure officers act in ways that build public trust, accountability, and respect for human rights.

"CP Adepoju assures the public that the investigation will be thorough, transparent and fair. Any officer found guilty will face the right punishment according to the law and the Nigeria Police Act," the statement added.

The Rivers State Police Command thanked the public for reporting such incidents and urged citizens to keep reporting any misconduct, corruption, and abuse of power through the proper complaint channels.

The Command is dedicated to professional policing, discipline, integrity, and providing quality service to all Rivers State residents.
